How to deal with loneliness as a single woman

There are different reasons why one might feel lonely ex. Emotional loneliness or social loneliness, it’s not a one size fits all, but the feeling of emptiness of loneliness I believe everyone can relate to.

In this blog I will specifically talk about overcoming loneliness as a single woman.

What is loneliness? Loneliness is an unpleasant emotional response to percieved isolation. When you’re feeling lonely, it feels like an emptiness within yourself, a sense of discomfort and disconnectedness.

As a single women there can be pressure to be part of a partnership. When you are not you can feel like a defect which can make you feel lonelier. Desperation to be part of a relationship can lead a woman to connect with the wrong partner just so they can escape the feeling of being alone.

Below are tip to overcome the feelings of loneliness and take some time to connect deep within yourself. I promise you it will be for the better, because once you discover you are a whole and complete just as you are you will start to enjoy your alone time.

Here are some steps to take to overcome the feelings of loneliness.

Watch Your Negative Thoughts

Start to become aware of the thoughts in your head. There are times that we have self-defeated thoughts that causes us pain or is causing us to live in a state of fear.

If you constantly tell yourself that you’re not good enough or that you’ll never find love, you’re likely to feel lonelier and more isolated. This is because low self-esteem can make it difficult to connect with others and feel confident in ourselves.

It can make you focus on the negative. If you’re constantly thinking about all the things that are wrong with being single, you’re likely to overlook the positive aspects of your life. Self-deprecating thoughts will keep you feeling isolated. You need to be mindful of the way that you speak to yourself.

“Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words. They become Actions. Watch your actions, they become Habits. Watch your habits, they become your character” – Mahatma Gandhi

Develop Self- Awareness Through Meditation

“The root of loneliness isn’t the absence of other people but an inner absence – you don’t have a centered awareness of your true self”  – Deepak Chokra

We are not comfortable being alone, we look for something outside of us to validate us, to tell us that we are good enough. A good majority of us don’t feel like we are enough and whole. Society tells us that we are not enough. We need to buy more and have more in order to feel good about ourselves, but this does not provide happiness. Buying that new bag won’t give us joy, or that new new car, or house. Yes, it can give you temporary happiness, but it’s only short term, same with a partner.

True happiness is within, it’s your true self, it’s eternal. When you are connected and aligned with your true self, you feel lovable and connected, whether you are surrounded by people in a stadium or spending some quiet time by yourself. Practicing meditation will help bring you back to yourself.  It allows you to get to the root of your loneliness, what lies behind the origins of this emotion, and how you can feel more connected to the world around you.

Start your morning with a quick 10-minute meditation. Remind yourself what you are grateful for. Then sit in the silence breathing in and out, don’t try to change anything. Your mind might want to start thinking, but just be an observer of your thoughts, do not attach. Be mindful of your breathing patterns. Once you are done with your meditation you can end the practice with an affirmation. A good one would be  “I embrace the rhythm of life and let it unfold”.

Make this a consistent habit and you begin to get answers to your questions.

Building Connections

One of Marslaw’s Hierarchy of Human Needs is love and belonging. Building a community with like-minded individuals can make you feel connected and belong. Make sure to look for connection with below values in mind:

  • Emotional intimacy – feeling heard and listened to.
  • Shared Values- sharing similar core values
  • Common Interests – having similar activities or hobbies

It’s not about quantity it’s about quality, and being intentional about the quality of people you are bringing into your life. You can also meet amazing people through volunteering. Such a great way to participate in a selfless act and give your time to help others in need. That is a way that you can feel much more purposeful and led with direction in your life and less focused on loneliness.

Connecting With A Higher Power

Connection with higher power can provide a sense of comfort, support, and belonging. This can be especially helpful in combating loneliness, as it can offer a sense of connection to something larger than oneself.

There are many different ways to connect with a higher power. Some people find it helpful to pray, meditate, or attend religious services. Others find comfort in spending time in nature or in reading spiritual texts. There is no right or wrong way to connect with a higher power, as what works for one person may not work for another.

When feeling lonely, it is important to remember that you are not alone. There are many people who feel lonely, and there are things you can do to cope. Connection with a higher power, building community, and a deep sense of self-awareness can be a powerful way to combat loneliness and find comfort and support.
